Fall Seasonal Plumbing Tips

It’s that beautiful time of year again when the leaves change and the weather cools off.  This is also a great time to check a few plumbing upkeep items off of your to-do list!  Here are just a few items for you to check on during the fall season:

Check On Your Sump Pump

Sump pumps have a tendency to fail without much warning.  It is always a good idea to check regularly that it is still in working order.  Simply lift up the lid and pour in a bucket of water.  Make sure that the pump turns on and clears the water out of the sump pit.  If you are unable to lift the lid, or if you are unsure of the function of your sump pump, this is a great time to call us to check on your pump.

Keep in mind, just because your pump is working today does not mean it will work tomorrow.  Sump pumps last 3-5 years on average depending on how often they run.  If your sump pump hasn’t been replaced in a few years, it is always better to replace it before it fails.

Disconnect Your Hoses

Now that the nights are getting a little colder, this is a great time to get in the habit of removing your hoses when you are not using them.  Keeping a hose attached to an outdoor spigot in cold temperatures increases the likelihood that freezing and damage will occur.

It isn’t quite time to winterize your spigots just yet.  Many homeowners are still watering lawns and gardens for a few weeks.  But remembering to remove your hoses now will help prevent issues as winter comes.

Flush Your Water Heater

When the ground temperature begins to fall over the winter, and the incoming water is colder, your water heater will begin working even harder.  Fall is a great time to flush your water heater and remove any built-up sediment.  Flushing will help your water heater work more efficiently and increase its lifespan.

While a water heater flush is something many homeowners can do themselves, if you have any hesitation at all feel free to schedule an appointment with Trident!  Our experienced technicians will flush your water heater and inspect it to make sure it’s still in good condition.
